What does liposuction surgery entail?
Liposuction involves the removal of body fat through small incisions made in the area being treated. Fat is removed through multiple cannulas inserted into the small incisions.
This method of body sculpting is appropriate for fat pockets on the thighs, stomach, abdomen, hips, knees, and chin. It is particularly successful at improving the contours of the area around the hips and thighs which so many women find problematic.
The procedure can last up to three hours with the duration being dependent on the size of the area being treated.
Liposuction is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. But if the area to be treated is small, it may be possible for you to have the procedure with a local anaesthetic.

Liposuction is a fantastic surgical tool to improve the appearance of the body. However, it should not be considered an alternative to losing weight. Best results are achieved by using liposuction sparingly and in discrete areas of the body, to remodel the thighs, for example. Using liposuction to remove large quantities of fat for the purpose of weight loss can be damaging to the body and is not undertaken at this hospital.

After your procedure, you will be given all the information you need to care for yourself at home. Your surgeon will check that you are doing well before you leave the hospital. There will be some soreness for a few weeks after your procedure and you will need to wear a supportive garment while your body heals.
You can discuss any issues at your regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon, but you can also phone us any time after your discharge if you are concerned or have any questions. Scarring is minimal after liposuction and you will be delighted with your new contoured shape.
