NBPH-Treatment-Pinnaplasty

Many of the patients who come to us for pinnaplasty are relatively young, as this can be an issue that causes self-consciousness from a young age. However, there is no upper age bar for this procedure.

This surgery aims to ensure that your ears are balanced with the shape of your head and face. Your consultant will discuss if and how this can be achieved at your pre-surgery consultations.

On this page, we look at:

  • What is pinnaplasty?
  • Is there an alternative surgery?
  • Why choose North Bristol Private Hospital for your ear correction surgery?

What is pinnaplasty?

Pinnaplasty is a short and effective operation to ‘pin back’ ears that stand away from the head. Your surgeon can create a more attractive shape for the ear at the same time.

Your surgeon will access the skin and cartilage through incisions behind your ear, ensuring the scars are invisible.

Our surgeons use different techniques according to the nature of your surgery. All available options will be discussed at your consultation once the surgeon has assessed your ears.

Is there an alternative surgery?

A few congenital disorders and malformations of the ear require corrective surgery. These include microtia, anotia and constricted ear. However, the surgery used in these situations is reconstructive rather than cosmetic.

How is pinnaplasty carried out?

Surgery will normally take about an hour and a half. Your surgeon may perform it under general anaesthetic or with a combination of local anaesthetic and sedation, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Incisions will be made at the back of the ear, and your surgeon will remove skin and cartilage to remodel the ear, making it lie closer to the side of your head.

Frequently asked questions

We advise our patients to rest for the first two weeks after surgery, but most patients recover quickly after that. After six weeks, any swelling will have diminished, and the benefits of surgery will be apparent.

There are always risks with any surgery, and part of your discussion with your surgeon will be whether this procedure’s benefit outweighs the intervention’s risk.

Rest assured that complications with pinnaplasty are rare. Choosing a premium provider like North Bristol Private Hospital minimises these risks further.

We will provide you with full details of all the possible complications and provide you with a detailed consent form during your consultation.
